Taking the time to connect with your employees can be an effective way to build your business.

Editor’s note: this is part two of a two-part series. Here’s part 1 entitled Your Employees Want To Be Valued and That Does Not Always Require More Money

Here are the three things you can do to you show your employees you value them:

1. Show and Tell them you value their contributions:

Officevibe found that 65% of employees feel they do not receive enough praise and 35% said they had to wait 3 or more months to receive feedback from their managers.

Employees want to receive weekly and daily opportunities to talk, learn what they are doing well and see you are paying attention.

Recognition of their work and contributions can include a monetary reward but as I said earlier that could have a diminishing impact over time and if you don’t get the number right if can have a demotivating impact.

Interestingly a small token of $50 gift certificate for a performance on one project can be more impactful then a $250 monetary bonus at year end.

Recognizing your employees in small ways on a regular basis for things such as their work on projects, contributions to the company culture, contributing their ideas can make a lasting positive impression.

2. Show you care about their lives and career:

Your employees are whole people whose lives do not shut down when they reach the workplace.

15% of employees told Officevibe don’t see themselves working at their company one year from now, 25% said they leave work feeling drained, 60% said their job is taking a toll on their personal life and 57% don’t see any career advancement opportunities with their employers.

Learning what it is about your workplace that is causing stress is one way to show you are paying attention.

Listen to what they tell you. If the hours of work are creating stress because of family responsibilities or a long commute and consider if you have the ability let employees adjust their hours of work, sometimes it is a small change that can make a difference.

Many of your employees want to develop both employment related skills and personnel development skills.

Allow employees to learn other aspects of the business, through job shadowing and mentorships, giving them time off or access for skills training including on the job training.

3. Create a good place for them to work not just for them to make a salary:

Your employees do not need to be best friends with you or their colleagues, but the odds are they do want positive relationships within the organization.

According to Officevibe 35% of employees wish their manager communicated more frequently with them and 37% don’t think they have enough social interaction with their colleagues. By creating opportunities for employees to work on a range of projects together and work with different colleagues on different projects you can help them develop better and more relationships.

Communicate your company values by actions that could include involvement in the community. Taking some minor amounts of time to become involved in a civic or community project can pay off in many ways for your small business.

Taking the time to connect with your employees can be an effective way to build your business and even reduce your own stress by increasing your opportunity to meet your own hierarchy of needs.
